AGN Urges Chief Willie Obiano To Build Anambra Film Village

By on June 3, 2014

Movie practitioners in Anambra State, under the aegis of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Anambra chapter have called on the Governor of the State, Chief Willie Obiano to build a film village in Awka to serve as a tourist centre. The group also said that the village would serve as a rallying point for entertainers and as well boost the revenue generation of the state. They said such was necessary as works of local entertainers were now highly patronized around the world.

The state chairman of AGN, Chief Samson Obidinma, who made the call at the 2014 AGN Democracy Charity Carnival with the theme: “Sustaining Democracy Through Entertainment”, said such move would boost the revenue base of the state and also make it a state to reckon with in the entertainment industry. Obidinma said the guild chose the theme considering the role of Nollywood movies in attitudinal changes, and to produce movies that highlight undemocratic practices in a democratic society.

“As partners in progress with government at all levels in the business of job creation, nation building and employment of labour, there is no gainsaying the fact that so many graduates who should have been roaming the street in search of non-existing white collar jobs are now gainfully employed by the Nollywood. It may interest the governor to know that Nollywood is the third largest movie makers in the world after Hollywood and Bollywood. Nollywood is equally a foreign exchange earner for the nation via films”, Obidinma said.

Earlier, the guild had paid a visit to inmates of Awka prison, where the chairman expressed displeasure over the lack of government presence in the prisons, while calling for concerted efforts to ameliorate the plight of the inmates. He said the guild came to celebrate 15 solid years of uninterrupted democracy with their brothers who through one means or the other found themselves in the prisons.

Responding the deputy comptroller of Awka Prisons, Mr. Emmanuel Oguejiofor represented by the Chief Warder, CSP Sunday Chijioke Orji, thanked Anambra AGN for gesture. He appealed to the government and public spirited individuals to come to their aid and provide them with portable water and all other basic amenities.
